Creating a Successful Product Listing on Amazon

Last time we went through how to create an Amazon Seller Central account so today we will talk about how to list your first product as an Amazon Seller.

Setting Clear Objectives

The image above might be familiar to you if you have tried shopping on Amazon before; if not, it shows how your listing will appear to customers including the specific sections on the page:

  • Title
  • Images
  • Variations
  • Bullet Points
  • Featured Offer
  • Other Offers
  • Description

Creating a successful product listing on Amazon is very important for visibility and sales. There are three primary methods to list products on Amazon: creating a new product listing, matching an existing product listing, and uploading a template. This guide will walk you through each process and in the end, you will choose the best method for your products.

1. Creating a New Product Listing on Amazon Seller Central

You can use this first method when you want to sell a product that is not currently listed on Amazon, and when you have full control over the product listing details. All you have to do is login to your Amazon Seller Central account, click on inventory at the top menu, click on “Add product,” then select “Create a new product listing.” From here you will proceed to describe the appropriate product category of your listing, then provide comprehensive details about the product you’re selling. There are five considerations to make when providing the product details:

  • 1. Title:-

For the titles, you have to pay attention to four things:

Include Relevant Keywords: Use keywords that potential customers are likely to use when searching for your product.

Brand and Model: Mention your brand and model number if applicable.

Key Features: Highlight key features and benefits (but you must avoid promotional phrases like “Free shipping” or “100% quality guaranteed”).

Character Limit: Keep the title within Amazon’s character limit (usually around 200 characters, including spaces) for better readability and SEO.

An Example of a great title:

“Stainless Steel Insulated Travel Mug - 16oz, Spill-Proof, BPA-Free - Keeps Drinks Hot or Cold for 12 Hours”

Ø Breakdown:

  • Stainless Steel Insulated Travel Mug”: Keywords like “stainless steel,” “insulated,” and "travel mug" are essential for search visibility.
  • “16oz”: Specifies the capacity, which is important for customers looking for a specific size.
  • “Spill-Proof”: Highlights a key feature that can be a deciding factor for buyers.
  • “BPA-Free”: Emphasizes a health and safety aspect, appealing to health-conscious consumers.
  • “Keeps Drinks Hot or Cold for 12 Hours”: Clearly states the main benefit, enhancing the product's appeal.

  • 2. Images:-

Upload high-quality images showing different angles and uses of the product. Here’s a breakdown of the key things to note:

High-Quality Images: Use high-resolution images (at least 1000 x 1000 pixels) to ensure they are clear and zoomable.

Multiple Angles: Show the product from various angles.

Use Contextual Images: Include images showing the product in use to help customers visualize it better.

White Background: Ensure the main image has a pure white background to meet Amazon's guidelines.

Image Example: The image below for this protein powder product features FOUR critical aspects that make it give a strong first impression for customers.

Why this image creates a strong customer appeal:

  • Primary Image : Clear, high-resolution image (at least 1000 x 1000 pixels to ensure they are clear and zoomable) of the product container against a white background.
  • Infographics: : Visuals detailing nutritional content like protein and BCAA amounts.
  • Lifestyle Images: Photos showing athletes, such as CrossFit enthusiasts, using the product in their routines.
  • Demonstration Video: A video that shows how to use the product, mix it into shakes, and explains the health benefits for muscle recovery.

  • 3. Bullet Points:-

Ensure you highlight the main features and benefits. Note that the max length for individual bullets is 256 characters (recommended 1000 total for all bullets). Here are FOUR things to consider when creating bullet points for you’re product:

  • Concise and Clear: Use short, descriptive bullet points to highlight the product’s key features and benefits
  • Prioritize Information: Place the most important information first.
  • Benefits-Oriented: Place your focus on how the features benefit the customer.
  • Use Keywords: Make sure you incorporate relevant keywords naturally.

Bullets Example for the Protein Powder:-

1. 24g Protein Per Serving: Supports muscle growth and recovery.

  • Explanation: Bullet 1 highlights the main benefit of high protein content.

2. 5.5g BCAAs: Helps reduce muscle soreness and improve endurance.

  • Explanation: Bullet 2 specifies additional nutrients beneficial for fitness..

3. Double Rich Chocolate Flavor: Delicious taste that makes your protein shake enjoyable.

  • Explanation: Bullet 3 appeals to the taste preference of customers.

4. Easy to Mix: Instantly dissolves in water, milk, or your favorite beverage.

  • Explanation: Bullet 4 emphasizes convenience and ease of use.

5. Tested for Banned Substances: Ensures safety and compliance for athletes

  • Explanation: Bullet 5 provides assurance of product safety.

  • 4. Description:-

Write a detailed description that elaborates on the product's features and uses.

Description Example:

“Fuel your workouts with Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein Powder in Double Rich Chocolate flavor. Each serving provides 24 grams of high-quality whey protein to support muscle growth and recovery, along with 5.5 grams of BCAAs to help reduce muscle soreness and improve endurance. This protein powder is easy to mix, making it a convenient addition to your daily routine, whether you're at home or on the go. Tested for banned substances, it ensures safety and compliance for athletes. Enjoy a delicious protein shake that helps you reach your fitness goals faster.”

  • 5. Keywords:-

Add search terms to improve discoverability.

Breakdown:

  • Relevance: Ensure each keyword is relevant to the product.
  • Variations: Include different variations and synonyms that customers might use in their searches.
  • Avoid Duplication: Avoid repeating keywords used in the title and bullet points to maximize the use of keyword space

Once your product details are set, proceed to set a competitive price that is based on market research and then determine your fulfilment method. You can either choose to do Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) – where Amazon handles product movement, or you can decide to do Fulfilment by Merchant, where you’ll do all the work. After this, you can submit your listing and wait for approval.

2. Matching an Existing Product Listing

You have the option of choosing method two when your product is already listed on Amazon by another seller, or when you want to save time by making use of an existing product detail page. Just like in method 1, you will click on “Add a product,” but this time, you will need to have copied the ASIN (Amazon Standard Identification Number) to find the existing listing. Browse through the ASIN search results until you find an exact match and select it. You’ll be prompted to enter your offer details such as condition, price, quantity, and fulfillment – then submit the details for listing approval. Apart from ASIN, Amazon also accepts search by EAN and UPC.

3. Using Bulk Upload Template

Uploading a product template on Amazon is only available for Professional sellers. The bulk upload template approach is useful when you want to list multiple products at the same time. This can be a little bit complex for a new Amazon seller as it involves filling out a spreadsheet template with precise product details then uploading it to Amazon for approval.

Conclusion

We’ve seen the 3 main ways to list products on Amazon so all you need to do is decide which one fits your product. Whether you are listing a single unique item or managing a large inventory, understanding these methods will help you optimize your listings to trigger sales and presence.
